Instituted by Swami Sivananda in 1936, the credit for the flourishment of yoga in Rishikesh undoubtedly goes to the Ashram. Swami Sivananda, who was born in Tamil Nadu in 1887, displayed spiritual tendency from an early age. His aim to serve humanity led him to qualify as a doctor in Malaysia. However, after serving for many years, he returned back to India and wandered several parts of the country for his social cause.
