Situated in the spiritual environment of Rishikesh, Swami Swatantranand Ashram was formed in the year 1990, under Shiv Shakti Trust in Rishikesh. The Ashram was initiated by PP Swami Swatantranand Ji as the epicentre of spiritual and meditation programs in Rishikesh. Swami Ji from an early age was deeply inspired by Swami Vivekananda and Mahatma Gandhi. He wanted to follow the principle of Desh Seva (Nation serving) and Adhytam Seva (Spiritual serving), as shown by Mahatma Gandhi and Swami Vivekananda respectively. He was also involved with the JP movement to restore democratic ethics in India. After his release from the jail at the time of emergency, he joined Bhoodan Andolan led by Acharya Vinoda Bhave along with Shri S. Jagannathan to serve the people from Rajasthan, Maharastra, and Bihar.

Swamiji gained knowledge of Bhagwad Geeta and Vedanta from Swami Dayanand Ji and Swami Chinmaya Nand Ji. Thereafter, he formed a centre to flourish the knowledge that he gained from his Gurus to the others. Soon the Ashram became a hotspot for learning Vedanta, Bhagwad Geeta, and Ram Katha. From his ashram, Swamiji taught Art of Living programs for over 10 years. He also made the ashram, a centre for learning meditation and yoga in its authentic and traditional form.
